Woburn Golf Club sits at Little Brickhill near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, about 30 minutes from the M25. It is built on the vision of the Marquess of Tavistock, later the 14th Duke of Bedford, who is said to have replied “How sad, I had intended to build a golf course” when the Milton Keynes Development Corporation wanted his land for a recreational park.
The result is three championship courses. The Duke’s Course, designed by Charles Lawrie and opened in 1976, is the original. It is a par 72 carved through pine, birch and chestnut woodland, with bracken, heather and gorse and clever routing rather than heavy bunkering. The 3rd, a short par 3, is at its best when the rhododendrons bloom. Golf Monthly ranks it 86th in its 2025/26 Top 100 for Great Britain and Ireland. The Duchess opened in 1980 and rewards the thinking golfer, while the Marquess, opened in June 2000, is described by the club as its jewel in the crown.
Woburn has staged some sixty professional tournaments, including the British Masters and the Women’s British Open, and Ian Poulter and Charley Hull are both members.
Visitors are generally welcome on weekdays, subject to booking and a handicap certificate.
