Hindhead Golf Club sits at Hindhead in Surrey, on a heathland site the club describes as one of the most glorious natural settings in Britain. It was founded in 1904 by a group of enthusiasts that included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the layout is credited to five-time Open champion J.H. Taylor.
The course is a game of two halves. The front nine is laid out through heather-strewn Ice Age valleys, while the back nine climbs onto a heathland plateau with wide views across the Surrey countryside. Fairways are bordered by heather and tall pines, and in spring rhododendrons and azaleas add colour. It is a par 69 of a little over 6,100 yards, so it rewards thoughtful shot-making rather than power, and the bunkers have recently been upgraded.
Top100GolfCourses ranks it 46th in England, and Hindhead has a strong competitive record. It served as a Regional Qualifying venue for The Open Championship from 2000 to 2005 and hosted Senior Open Qualifying in 2021. It sits in a cluster of heathland courses along the Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex borders, alongside Hankley Common and Liphook.
Visitors are welcome by arrangement, and the club also welcomes societies, groups and corporate days.
