Fleet, Hampshire. A 1904 heathland club with Braid, Colt, Simpson, Steel and Mackenzie in its design history, and the home club of US Open champion Justin Rose.
North Hants Golf Club sits at Fleet in Hampshire, on a heathland course with a long architectural pedigree. Founded in 1904 and opened by Princess Alexander of Teck, it was conceived as an ambitious blend of gentleman’s club and American-style country club, with golf, lawn tennis and croquet, to attract members from London.
The course began as a James Braid design and has been refined by a remarkable line of architects. Harry Colt carried out an extensive redesign in 1913, Tom Simpson made improvements in 1930, Donald Steel added three new holes in 2001, and Tom Mackenzie redesigned the par-5 3rd, which reopened in 2019. Golf Monthly describes it as both a strong test and very attractive, with springy turf and fine conditioning, and it notes that both nines open with par 3s. The 3rd is a genuine risk-reward par 5, and the course closes with a very fine par 4.
North Hants is also known as the home club of Justin Rose, and its modern clubhouse has an upper floor named the Justin Rose Room after his 2013 US Open victory. The club founded the Hampshire Hog amateur event in 1957. Top100GolfCourses ranks it 95th in England.
Visitors and societies are welcome, and the seated terrace has views over the course.
