Liphook Golf Club
Liphook, Hampshire. A strategic heathland classic by Arthur Croome on the Hampshire and Sussex border, refined by Tom Simpson and updated by Mackenzie and Ebert, with a Top 100 ranking.
Liphook Golf Club sits on the Hampshire and Sussex border, within the South Downs National Park, on classic heathland of pine, birch, oak and heather. Golf Monthly ranks it 55th in its 2025/26 Top 100 for Great Britain and Ireland, and Top100GolfCourses ranks it first in Hampshire.
The course was designed by Arthur Croome and opened in the early 1920s, and the R&A soon recognised it as an exemplary inland heathland course. It is also an early example of strategic design, forcing good golfers to choose routes that take them close to danger, while giving higher handicappers room to play. It was Croome’s only course design before he turned to journalism, and Tom Simpson, a partner in Fowler, Abercromby, Simpson and Croome, later added to the layout.
Recent work by Mackenzie and Ebert, completed in 2021, rerouted parts of the course, added two new holes and moved the road crossing. It is a par 71 for men. The 7th, known as Two Counties, is a par 5, and the redesigned 8th and 9th have bedded in well. The club celebrated its centenary in 2022.
Visitors are generally limited to afternoons in summer, with a handicap required, and the course closes to visitors in winter.
