Woking Golf Club sits at Hook Heath in Surrey, and it is the oldest of the county’s celebrated heathland courses. Founded in 1893 by a group of London barristers, it began as a Tom Dunn design and was refined in the early 20th century by members John Low and Stuart Paton, with later contributions from Tom Simpson.
That history is why architects still come here to study. Woking is best known as a pioneer of strategic design, including the central fairway bunkers that caused a stir on the 4th hole when they appeared. The result is a heathland course of fast-running fairways, purple heather and intricately contoured greens, described by Golf Monthly as a case study in strategic design. The elevated 6th tee offers one of the finest views on the course, and the clubhouse sits close to the 14th green.
Golf Monthly ranks Woking 79th in its 2025/26 Top 100 for Great Britain and Ireland. It forms part of Surrey’s famous Three Ws alongside West Hill and Worplesdon, and is often considered the most demanding of the trio.
Visitors are welcome on weekdays, mainly in twoballs, with some larger group times on selected days.
