Wildernesse Golf Club
Seal, near Sevenoaks, Kent. A wooded, tree-lined parkland course founded in 1890 and reshaped by James Braid, with tight fairways, small greens and Open Qualifying status.
Wildernesse Golf Club sits in Seal, just east of Sevenoaks, in wooded Kent countryside. Founded in 1890, it has more than 125 years of history and is a private members’ club with a strong reputation for tree-lined golf.
The course is a par 72 of just over 6,500 yards, and its charm lies in the setting. Fairways are tight and heavily wooded, with mature oak, beech and birch, and the greens are small and undulating. Careful driving matters far more than distance, and strategic bunkering adds to the test. James Braid made significant changes in 1929, including the par-3 5th, and the back nine has three attractive one-shotters as well as par 5s at the 11th, 12th and 18th. The uphill 15th has been compared to Sunningdale.
The front nine has seven tight par 4s and is routed clockwise around Chance Wood, yet the course is still easy to walk despite its challenge. Wildernesse is an Open Qualifying venue recognised by the R&A and regularly hosts county and EGU events.
Visitors are welcome by arrangement, and Bat & Ball and Sevenoaks are the nearest stations.
