North Foreland Golf Club sits on the cliffs of the Isle of Thanet near Broadstairs in Kent, with panoramic views over the sea. Founded in 1903 as a nine-hole course by a group of enthusiasts led by Lord Avebury and William Capel Slaughter, it grew to 18 holes as the press baron Alfred Harmsworth, later Lord Northcliffe, took an interest and folded the North Foreland Lighthouse into the course.
Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson later redesigned the layout, using the natural chalk cliffs and sea views. The result is a clifftop and downland course on free-draining chalk, measuring a little over 6,400 yards from the back tees. The front nine is open and expansive, the back nine tighter and arguably more interesting, and Kingsgate Castle appears in view from several holes. The 4th, known as Tongue Light, is a par 5 of 465 yards close to the cliff edge, and the 14th plays uphill into the prevailing wind.
The club also has the Northcliffe Course, an 18-hole par-3 layout. North Foreland has been used as a Final Qualifying venue for The Open, and it sits in good company with Royal St George’s, Prince’s and Royal Cinque Ports on the Kent coast.
