Knole Park Golf Club sits at Sevenoaks in Kent, within the 1,000-acre medieval deer park beside Knole House. It is inland golf with a difference. Top100GolfCourses describes it as a country park that happens to have a golf course on it, and deer roam the parkland, occasionally coming close to the golfers.
The course was laid out in 1924 by J.F. Abercromby, and Top100GolfCourses regards it as one of his most intact Golden Age designs. In his own words, the aim was to lay out an interesting 18 holes, some of them quite remarkably so. It is a par 70 of around 6,200 to 6,500 yards, depending on the tees, and the terrain is rugged and rolling, with tight turf, huge old trees and bunkers placed with care. There are six distinctive par 3s, unusual for a course of this length. The Greensand Ridge subsoil drains quickly, so play is possible all year round.
Knole Park is ranked 79th in England and 38th in London and the South East by Top100GolfCourses. The Knole estate, its huge trees and the deer give the round a setting unlike most inland courses.
